Dancing With the Stars Recap: Insta-Dance Returns, Chelsea and Mark Waltz to the Top!

With just five pairings left this season, Dancing with the Stars brought back the fun insta-dance Monday night, in addition to the usual weekly performances.

Oh yes. Each couple had to do one individual dance and the instant dance, where the tandems received their routine’s music a mere half hour early.

They actually all came through with flying colors. As usual, there was no one breakout performer, but everyone made their case to stick around.

Kirstie and Maks Get a 10!

Kirstie Alley, in typical fashion, bungled the Argentine tango in rehearsals, saying there are “enough steps there to stomp all the cockroaches in New York.”

When it came time to put up or shut up, though, she delivered with “just the right amount of passion to lead him into the ultimate seduction,” Bruno said.

She even earned a 10! Later, her insta-dance had the best energy and attitude of them all, earning her a total of 53 points, just behind the two favorites.

Chelsea Kane got in Mark Ballas' face this week and whipped him into shape, all while maintaining her own civility and good cheer. The result? First place!

Their waltz earned them a season-high 29 points, while their insta-salsa tacked on another 26 for a total of 55 and sole possession of the lead last night.

Hines Ward battled adversity (his police incident last week) but got over his stress and was really able to relax into the routine. He's got the charisma!

He and Kym may not be the most talented, but they're not far off, and that smile has to win over fans every week. He may still be the man to beat.

Romeo had a lot to prove after he plummeted from first to worst in a mere week, but he redeemed himself with two relatively clean efforts on Monday.

Ralph and Karina

Beset by a ruptured cyst behind his knee, Ralph Macchio's rehearsal time was cut down from the usual 40 hours to nine, and unfortunately it showed.

He will score major points from the audience for getting out there at all, but the question is whether it will be enough to overcome this major deficit.

The week's Dancing With the Stars scoreboard ended as such ...

  1. Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas: 29 (Waltz), 26 (Salsa). Total: 55!
  2. Hines Ward and Kym Johnson: 28 (Foxtrot), 26 (Jive). Total: 54!
  3. Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: 28 (Tango), 25 (Salsa). Total: 53!
  4. Romeo and Chelsie Hightower: 27 (Tango), 25 (Salsa). Total: 52!
  5. Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff: 25 (Waltz), 21 (Cha Cha). Total: 46!

What do you think? Will the voters come to Ralph's rescue and take into account the fact that he's hurt? If so, who will be voted off in his stead?

Who will win Dancing With the Stars Season 12?
